Simple Natural Living: Homemade Hand Sanitizer How To

"Please don't touch that, it's germy!" Those words leave my mouth entirely too often. City living with a toddler (or really living anywhere with a toddler) isn't exactly what I'd call clean. Whether it's an overcrowded playground or overused subway seat, we're picking up microscopic bacteria everywhere we go. Most of the time I try to let it slide. I mean, all that exposure is just helping us build a strong immune system, right? Right. But other times, I find myself wishing we could jump into a tub of sanitizer. For awhile now, I've been telling myself that I should just break down and buy some hand sanitizer. But, the strong chemical smell and drying effects make it hard to follow through. Enter; this all-natural hand sanitizer recipe. Not only does it smell wonderful, but it's thought to be effective at killing some of the most common types of bacteria (including staph and e.coli). Problem solved.

What you'll need:

How to:

Really simple. Just add all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Once all of the components are blended, transfer the mixture to a small container (a few empty hotel shampoo bottles works really well.)
The sanitizer will be good for about a month as long as it's kept in a cool place away from sunlight. Don't think you can get through that much hand sanitizer in one month? Make it in smaller batches or pass the extra around to your friends.

  1. Interesting! I'm going to have to try this one day. I wonder, though, how harsh this would be on your skin?

  3. Ouu, neat! Now that we're entering cold season here I've started packing hand sanitizer in my purse with me when I go out, but I hate the idea of chemicals absorbing into my skin. This sounds like a nice alternative!

    Also, ADORE the illustrations!
